DS Smith was the police officer in charge of the manhunt for Clayton Hibbs when he was sprung from his fifteen-year prison sentence for the murder of Kylie Platt while attending the funeral of his father, Dane Hibbs, in February 2019.

In an audacious move, Clayton's stepbrother Macca had organised fake undertakers and at a given signal the accompanying prison officers were attacked at the graveside during the committal and Clayton's handcuffs put out of action with bolt cutters. Clayton managed to run free but Macca and the fake undertakers were apprehended by the officers with assistance from Billy Mayhew who had accompanied Shona Ramsey to the church. Before fleeing the churchyard, Shona begged Clayton to stop his escape but he refused to listen to her.

As the men were led away, DS Smith arrested Shona for assisting the escape and taken to Weatherfield Police Station but was released after a few hours when her innocence was established. A day later, Smith visited Shona at 8 Coronation Street where she asked her of any possible hiding places where Clayton could be and assured her that Macca was in no position to harm her for interfering in the plan and assured her that she wasn't a target for any of his friends either.
