Detective Sergeant Garrett investigated the hospitalisation of Kirsty Soames in January 2013 after she accidentally fell downstairs at 9 Coronation Street during a row with Tyrone Dobbs.

For months, Tyrone had been suffering physical abuse and violence from Kirtsy but he was powerless in the face of the fact that Kirsty had not registered his name as father of their baby, Ruby. Knowing full well Kirsty’s tragic history of cruelty at the hands of her own father and fearful that she would treat the child in the same way, he hatched a plan to marry her to give him parental rights and then take the baby from her. The plan fell apart when Kirsty found out what he was up to from texts on a mobile.

In Weatherfield General, she turned the tables on Tyrone when she told Garrett that he had pushed her and she was worried for the sake of Ruby’s safety. Her convincing story and the fact that she used to be a police officer spurred into Garrett immediately contacting social services and having Ruby taken into care and Tyrone arrested. The next day he revisited the hospital and took Kirsty through a DASH report (Domestic Abuse, Stalking and Harassment) during which she elaborated on her lies and spun of web of lies of his supposed abuse of her. Back at the station and in the presence of his solicitor Abigail Carmichael, Garrett questioned Tyrone who was stunned to find out that he was supposed to have accused Kirsty. Garrett knew that Tyrone had been seeing Fiz Stape (who had been helping him with his plan to gain custody of Ruby) and had reports from his neighbours which seemed to back up Kirsty’s story. Tyrone was let go on bail while investigations continued.
