In March 2022 she conducted the enquiry when Laura Neelan confessed to murdering her husband Rick some three months previously. Laura had discovered that Gary was the actual culprit, defending himself when Rick had threatened to hurt his then girlfriend Sarah Platt and her family for unpaid debts. The body had been buried initially in Beacon Woods but was moved when the police became interested in the case of the missing man. It was then deposited in the grounds of a derelict brickworks which in 2022 were acquired by Weatherfield County FC for the construction of a new training ground.

Laura had discovered Gary's involvement after she had been diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and was desperate to find Rick to obtain money from him to secure their daughter Kelly's future. Laura bitterly regretted their neglect of Kelly her during her childhood, and saw that Gary and Maria Connor had revitalised the girl in giving her a new lease of life. Wanting that positive influence to continue without interruption, Laura took it upon herself to confess to the murder and let Gary off the hook. DS Beckett questioned Laura and made it clear that they didn't believe her confession, with Gary remaining their prime suspect.

From information gleaned from Gary, Laura was able to point the police to the whereabouts of the corpse. Within hours, a sick Laura had to be transferred to Weatherfield General where she died within a matter of days, closing the case.
