DI Young was a Detective Inspector who worked on two separate cases that merged together. In March 2017 Ken Barlow was pushed down the stairs at 1 Coronation Street, remaining in account coma for several weeks and unable to remember who his assailant was. All members of his family came under suspicion for different reasons. One of them was stepdaughter Tracy Barlow who was aggrieved that she had seemingly been disinherited from his will. At that time, she began to act strangely in her movements, causing boyfriend Luke Britton to finish with her and stepbrother Adam Barlow to grow suspicious about exactly what she was up to.
A few weeks earlier her ex-boyfriend, Rob Donovan, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of Tina McIntyre, escaped from custody when the prison van that was transferring him to another establishment crashed. With not just the authorities after him, but also a mob whose activities he had grassed upon, Rob made his way back to Weatherfield and hid in the empty premises of V Court Fitness, making contact with Tracy who supplied him with food and other essentials. Knowing of her own innocence as regards the attack on Ken, Tracy was concerned that her daughter Amy was the real culprit and saw the opportunity to spirit her away when Rob himself wanted to flee abroad via Scotland. Although Amy was oblivious as to what was going on, the three fled initially to a cottage in the Peak District. When Adam and Steve McDonald realised that they had not taken their phones but their passports were missing. they alerted DS McKinnon who was working on Ken’s case.
Seeing a possible connection, she alerted DI Young who was working on the Donovan case and the two visited Ken and Steve to tell them of what they thought was going on, saying that Tracy had denied any knowledge when they had spoken to her several weeks before and that they couldn't publicise Rob’s escape but were using Tracy and Amy's disappearance as a front, making an appeal for their whereabouts to flush out Rob. Bored to tears in the Peak District cottage, Amy walked to the local village one day and rang her father on his mobile when he was with the two police officers, thus revealing their whereabouts. DI Young led a squad of armed police officers to the cottage but Rob caught sight of their approach and, still thinking that Amy needed protection, Tracy put the two of them in her car and sent them off while she was arrested, still denying seeing Rob, and offering her own confession to attacking Ken to provide a cover for her actions. taken back to Weatherfield, Tracy was interviewed and DI Young tried to put the pressure on her by pointing out that her daughter was in the company of an escaped convict who was himself the target of violent mobsters.
Sent to court and about to plead guilty to protect her daughter, Tracy found out from family in the public seats that they still didn’t know where Amy was. At that moment, Rob burst in, intent on returning the favour and protecting Tracy. He said that Amy was safely back home and as the police tried to take him away on the judge's instructions, he yelled out that on the night of Ken’s attack Tracy was with him, and CCTV footage would prove it. Tracy instantly retracted her confession with the footage indeed subsequently proving her innocence. When Young interviewed Rob prior to being sent to his knew jail in Humberside, he told him half the story of what had happened when Tracy sheltered him in weatherfield, saying it had only been for one night in the Preston's Petals and he had given himself up knowing that Tracy was innocent of the assault on Ken. The sympathetic officer allowed the two ten minutes together before Rob was taken away where he convinced Tracy that Amy was innocent of her supposed crime. Daniel Osbourne was later revealed as Ken’s attacker.
