Crystal Webber was a medium, operating on a pay-per-view channel, who Leanne Battersby consulted while grieving after the death of her infant son Oliver. Even though badly strapped for cash, she paid for several consultations while hiding them from her stepson Simon Barlow. The night before the first consultation, she had found a feather by her bedroom window before she had retired to bed and was convinced it was a sign from heaven that Oliver was safe and happy. When told, Crystal agreed with her, saying that if she was on the other side, she would do anything to communicate with her loved ones. Finding solace in her words, Leanne tried to phone through for another appointment a few days later but killed the call and the TV transmission when Simon walked back into their flat. Later the same day, he again came back, found Leanne asleep on the sofa and Crystal's programme still broadcasting and began to realise that something was very wrong with his stepmother.
After Simon found proof of Leanne's expenditure on Crystal's "services", the two rowed but behind his back, Leanne continued to use her broadcasts as a crutch.
