The Court Clerk read out the charges against Yasmeen Metcalfe when she appeared before the bench, accused of the attempted murder of her husband Geoff.

Having sustained months of abusive bullying and coercive control at Geoff's hands, Yasmeen was in an utter daze as she stood in the dock and the clerk told her that this was her plea and trial preparation hearing. He was therefore forced to repeat the charge and ask for her plea when she seemed oblivious at his words, something he did with a touch of impatience in his voice.

To the relief of her granddaughter Alya, who had been worried that Yasmeen's state of mind would lead her to accept her guilt, she entered a formal plea of "not guilty" and was remanded in custody pending the next hearing.
