The Counsel worked on Mrs Bolan's divorce case in January 1968. Mrs Bolan had petitioned for the divorce which her husband was defending.
With some difficulty, the Counsel questioned Mrs Bolan on her marriage's ups and downs, including a second reconciliation with her husband which occurred when he promised to cut down on the drink. Mrs Bolan was a nervous wreck in the dock, breaking down in tears several times causing the Counsel to apologise to the judge.
The proceedings were watched from the back of the room by Jerry Booth, whose own divorce case had been postponed when Mrs Bolan's was moved from the previous day. As the case dragged on, Jerry was forced to wait until the next day to be seen.
