Production

Pre-pandemic

Iain MacLeod produced Coronation Street in its landmark sixtieth anniversary year. The year would see the programme be severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with measures being put in place by ITV to protect the cast and crew, and their families. These changes were implemented after a three-month production break between March and June, with filming and transmission continuing as normal until then.

The programme's 10,000th instalment was broadcast in February. The episode saw Rita Tanner receive an urn containing ex-husband Dennis Tanner's ashes, and Jenny Connor organise a coach outing to Blackpool to scatter them. Producers hadn't originally planned to mark the occasion, but changed their minds when they realised that airing this and the 60th anniversary in the same year provided an opportunity to craft an episode that was "Corrie to the core", with a "laconic, comedic and character-driven vibe." [1].

The episode culminated with the revelation that Ken Barlow was leaving the street to live at Stillwaters luxury retirement complex with his partner Claudia Colby. Similar to Mayfield Court in the 1990s, Stillwaters was intended as an ongoing feature of the programme, with scenes being recorded on location at Colshaw Hall in Cheshire. As he settled in, Ken met a familiar face, Norris Cole, who had recently moved there with fiancée Freda Burgess. Following Malcolm Hebden's health troubles, Norris was re-introduced in a part-time role which would be less strenuous for the actor. The storyline ended with Ken and Claudia splitting up and Ken returning to Coronation Street. This followed Rula Lenska's decision to leave the proramme after two years as a regular cast member [2].

Bethany Platt left Weatherfield in early March to work for a magazine in London, following a failed romance with Daniel Osbourne. Lucy Fallon had quit in 2019 in order to pursue other roles [3]. Daniel's late wife Sinead Osbourne made several appearances in videos recorded before the character's death. Some of these appearances included previous unaired footage, but all were banked prior to Katie McGlynn's departure from the show. For another scene, in which Daniel saw Sinead in Bethany's place, Katie McGlynn returned to filming. Ali Neeson also left screens in March when James Burrows quit after playing the part for two years [4]. Ali departured after a failed attempt to expose Gary Windass's crimes.

Shona Platt went to rehab in February after being shot by Derek Milligan the previous December and losing her memories of her time with David. Although Shona was seen in rehab briefly in Episode 10004, these shots were recorded before Julia Goulding went on maternity leave. She returned to screens in May, with Shona's recovery taking the rest of the year.

The programme's youngest cast members were also subject to changes as Ellis Blain and Elias Morgan-Smith departed as Bertie Osbourne, with Rufus Morgan-Smith continuing in the part solo, while an increased focus on Aled Winter-Brown, particularly his hearing difficulties, led producers to cast twins Harry and Harvey Thompson in the role, with Charlotte Holt and James Holt and Arthur, Lily and Lucy Taylor continuing as the other three quads.

Hiatus

On 11th March, the coronavirus disease 2019 was classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation [5]. Seven days later, the total number of deaths from the disease in the United Kingdom exceeded 100, with hundreds of new cases being confirmed each day [6]. Amid concerns over the safety of cast and crew, ITV announced that Coronation Street's weekly output would be cut to three half-hour episodes beginning on 30th March, but that filming would continue with smaller production units and scaled back location filming [7]. However, it became apparent that upcoming episodes would be unfilmable in current conditions without heavy rewrites, and on 22nd March the network announced that recording on its soaps was being suspended with immediate effect [8]. A Stay at Home order was announced the next day by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which imposed two-metre social distancing measures in shops and workplaces [9].

At the point where production stopped, the team had completed all filming up to Episode 10083, intended for transmission on 13th May, with a further eight episodes partially recorded. At half its usual output, Coronation Street could now remain on the air until 3rd July before running out of completed episodes. These would be edited slightly, with opening and ending credits added to instalments originally meant to air as double bills, although due to time contraints before the MediaCity studios were locked down, these credits were not remade but instead used those intended for both of that evening's episodes. Corrected credits would be broadcast from Episode 10066 onwards.

One unavoidable result of the staggered transmission pattern was that events such as VE Day and characters' birthdays were not marked on the appropriate dates. These were broadcast with the references intact. However, a disclaimer was added to Episode 10036 noting that the programme would continue to feature social gatherings due to episodes before recorded weeks in advance, and encouraging viewers to follow the current government health advice [10].

With storylines ramping up for Britain's Got Talent week when lockdown hit, Coronation Street had a strong set of episodes in the can to see it through to July. Chief among them was Geoff and Yasmeen Metcalfe's coercive control storyline, with Yasmeen stabbing Geoff following months of emotional abuse. James Bailey was outed in a storyline exploring homophobia in football, while Kelly Neelan returned as a full-time character, with Kel Allen appearing as her neglectful mother Laura. Kelly was quickly woven into the network of teen characters the programme had been nurturing in the past few years, alongside Corey Brent with whom she was responsible for sharing a pornographic video of Asha Alahan on the internet. The storyline saw Aadi Alahan appear for the first time in six months, now played by Adam Hussain. The previous actor, Zennon Ditchett had quit the show in 2019 in order to focus on his A-Level studies [11].

Episode 10042, the first to air as part of the reduced schedule, was the final script for the programme by its then-longest serving writer, Martin Allen.

In addition to the show itself, ITV kept Coronation Street in the public consciousness during lockdown with a series of clipshows entitled Coronation Street: Compilations and Coronation Street Icons. These were broadcast in the vacant 8.30pm timeslot usually occupied by the Street. Meanwhile, furloughed actor Colson Smith hosted a magazine-style show called Corrie Good News, in which he conducted virtual interviews about current storylines with members of the cast and prominent fans, with all participants recording their segments in their own homes. The series was released on Coronation Street's social media platforms and ran for ten episodes, with a 60th anniversary special released later in the year.
