Production

Victoria Street expands

Victoria street continuation

Victoria Street was expanded to include Weatherfield North Tram Station

The last block of episodes of Kieran Roberts's tenure were broadcast in January and February, bringing his twelve-year run as executive producer to an end. Roberts had left ITV the previous year and was not immediately replaced, leaving producer Kate Oates in sole charge of Coronation Street after Episode 9372.

Victoria Street doubled in size as the thoroughfare was expanded past the Victoria Court flats. The addition to the outdoor set, announced the previous May, had been planned since the move to MediaCityUK in 2014 [1]. The new street was introduced to viewers in a guided tour released on Coronation Street's social media accounts on 12th March, presented by Dolly-Rose Campbell [2], before it was officially unveiled to the press two days later. The extension was meant to represent an older part of Victoria Street, incorporating three-storey apartment buildings, warehouses, a fire escape, a new ginnel, and cobbles reclaimed from the Quay Street site [3]. For ease of filming, the road turned northwards at the far end, blocking off the top end of the set. Two new studios, numbered five and six, were opened behind the façade.

The centrepiece of the set extension was Victoria Gardens, a small urban natural space containing benches, a kids corner and an allotment area. A special mosaic-covered memorial bench sported a plaque paying tribute to Coronation Street super-fan Martyn Hett and all other victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. Victoria Gardens was the first part of the expansion to be seen, appearing in Episode 9436 on 20th April, with the rest appearing in the coming days.

Of the businesses operating in the area, the only one to feature within storylines was Speed Daal, Zeedan Nazir's new Pakistani street food restaurant situated in the basement of an old warehouse. The rest were simply frontages and were intended more as scenery than active workplaces. These included Weatherfield Snooker Hall, Tattoo'll Do Nicely, the Weatherfield Council Advice Centre, and the real-world establishments of Costa Coffee and the Co-Op. This was the first time that entire shopfronts had appeared on an ITV show as product placements [4]. Adjacent to them was the Weatherfield North Tram Station, which was used more frequently but still only a frontage. The platforms were not a part of the set, but were supposed to lie atop a viaduct next to the station entrance with only the perimeter built.

The entrance to Weatherfield Police Station, with a full reception area inside, was also constructed behind the Victoria Court flats. Despite its on-set location, this was meant as a separate hub, located an indeterminate distance away from Coronation Street.

Following the expansion, a new set tour was launched by Continuum Attractions, operator of the Quay Street tours in 2014 and 2015. Starting on 26th May, the guided tours took place on selected weekends when filming was not taking place and consisted of only the exterior set [5].

Resignation of Kate Oates

Under Kate Oates, Coronation Street's run of hard-hitting storylines continued. Two in particular tackled the subject of male mental health. In April, David Platt was sexually assaulted by fitness trainer Josh Tucker. Subsequent episodes saw David suffer in silence, before the suicide of neighbour Aidan Connor compelled him to speak up and confide in his family. Aidan's mental state had been subtly hinted at for months before he took his own life off-screen, having kept his torment private. The storylines were woven together in this way in order to stress the importance of seeking help [6]. The episode in which Johnny Connor found his son's body won writer Jonathan Harvey the Writers' Guild Award for Best Long Running TV series [7]. With the suicide storyline, Shayne Ward left the programme after three years, though he returned to record a video interview with Aidan ostensibly shot while the character was in hospital to donate a kidney to Carla Connor. The interview was played back in scenes shown in August.

In January, Pat Phelan claimed another two victims as Anna Windass was convicted of causing GBH based on evidence planted by Phelan, and Luke Britton was burned alive when Phelan shot his car's petrol tank in order to silence him. Dean Fagan had quit after four years playing Luke, but his exit was kept out of the papers in order to make Luke's death a shock to viewers [8]. Tisha Merry made a short return as Steph Britton to tie in with Luke's funeral.

Anna stabs phelan

Pat Phelan meets his end when Anna Windass ploughs a knife into his chest

Phelan's past finally caught up with him in March as the builder fell to his apparent death from a harbour in Whitehaven after a showdown with Eileen. Two episodes later, Phelan was revealed to be alive and recuperating at a bed and breakfast. His story reached a final end on Britain's Got Talent finals week, where Phelan attempted to snatch his grandson Zack Rubinstein at gunpoint and was ultimately stabbed to death by Anna Windass, newly released from prison. Debbie Rush had already left the programme by this point when the actress decided to move on having played Anna for ten years, but returned for two episodes to round off Anna's story and see her off to Durham [9]. Nicola Thorp, who played Phelan's daughter Nicola Rubinstein, also asked to be written out at the end of her one-year contract with the character leaving for Bristol with Zack [10].

Amid the praise the programme received for raising awareness of male mental health issues, the recent backlash over the dark subject matter intensified. In addition to the above-mentioned storylines, scenes highlighted include vicar Billy Mayhew taking heroin in St. Mary's Church [11], and Bethany Platt - working as a lap dancer at Tassels strip club - glassing a man in the face with a broken bottle [12], both of which aired on 28th February. In particular, celebrity fans Michael Parkinson [13], Fern Britton [14] and Martina Cole [15] complained that the show was too violent and called for a return to more light-hearted plots. Kate Oates addressed the criticisms while appearing on daytime TV promoting the suicide and rape storylines, arguing that, as a drama, the programme had to have something to say [16]. In a separate interview with the Radio Times, Oates accepted that the programme had become darker and stated her preference for comedy "within the darkness" rather than slapstick [17].

On 19th March, Oates confirmed that she was staying with Coronation Street until 2019 [18]. Just over a month later, ITV announced that the producer had quit the soap and would be standing down in June, to be replaced by Emmerdale producer Iain MacLeod [19]. Due to the timing of the announcement, the tabloids speculated that her departure was linked to the backlash over her dark storylines, but Oates confirmed that this was not the case [20].

Loose ends

The whereabouts of Norris Cole and Todd Grimshaw were addressed as it became clear that neither character would be returning to the programme in the near future. In April, Norris was revealed to be staying with Emily Bishop in Edinburgh, leaving Mary Taylor to run The Kabin in his stead. Malcolm Hebden was recovering from a heart attack and spent three months in an induced coma, though by December the actor had signed a new contract to return [21]. Todd, currently in hiding with Summer Spellman due to the sacking of actor Bruno Langley, was revealed to have punched a police officer and run off, thus enabling Summer to return without him.

Peter Barlow and Toyah Battersby's tenure as landlords of the Rovers Return ended after just one year in August. They had split up when Toyah attempted to pass off Eva Price and Aidan Connor's baby daughter Susie as their own, supposedly birthed by surrogate Jacqui Ainsworth, who had in fact miscarried. The storyline built up to Eva's exit as the character and her daughter reunited with Stella in France. Catherine Tyldesley had quit the programme after seven years in order to spend more time with her family [22].

Connors rovers

Jenny and Johnny Connor become licensees of the Rovers Return

Meanwhile, Johnny and Jenny Connor bought the Rovers and introduced a bed and breakfast service, opening up new story opportunities there. This was followed by Carla Connor's successful bid to regain control of Underworld from Alya Nazir, solidyfing the Connors' central role in the programme. Carla ran the factory in a 50/50 partnership with Peter Barlow. Also on the Connor front, Michelle's 2008 baby swap storyline was revisited as her biological son Alex Neeson, in training to become a doctor, started work at the medical centre. The character was recast with James Burrows in the role and was generally known as "Ali" in order to distinguish him from Alex Warner. Ryan Connor also returned, now played Ryan Prescott.

Sean Wilson appeared in three episodes as Martin Platt as part of the male rape storyline, reprising his role after a 13 year absence. The opportunity came as the executives involved in his dismissal in 2005 had since moved on [23]. Still with Robyn, Martin was in the process of leaving the country to emigrate to New Zealand.

In June, Rosie Webster, Craig Tinker and Gemma Winter "appeared" on ITV lifestyle show This Morning where they were interviewed by hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, guest-starring as themselves, about their roles in busting a drug-smuggling operation. Rosie then left Weatherfield to work in Japan as an assistant on a TV game show. The character was being written out for six months to cover Helen Flanagan's maternity leave, though the actress stated that she was "unsure" when she would be back [24]. In October, Flanagan confirmed that she had no immediate plans to return [25].

Qasim Akhtar departed at the end of his contract, having played Zeedan Nazir for a year longer than the three he originally envisioned [26]. Zeedan's wife Rana had recently left him for a woman, Kate Connor. The storyline explored the effects of Rana coming out on her strict Muslim family.

A storyline aired in July saw Jack Webster contract sepsis after grazing his knee and Kevin make the difficult decision to have part of his son's leg amputated. Able-bodied actor Kyran Bowes wore a green bandage on his leg which was edited out in post-production by the VFX team on occasions where Jack's leg was seen [27].

August also saw Jake Windass gain a new head as Seth and Theo Wild were replaced by Bobby Bradshaw.

Death and new life

Iain MacLeod was the third producer in a row who worked on Emmerdale and Coronation Street back-to-back. MacLeod had also been story editor on Coronation Street from 2009 to 2014. Although the handover from Kate Oates occurred in June, MacLeod was not credited as producer until Episode 9636 on 12th December, making it difficult to attribute particular storylines or casting decisions to either one. However, there was a marked change in the programme's tone in the latter months of the year.

Evelyn plummer publicity

Evelyn Plummer, Coronation Street's new "outspoken battleaxe"

Two characters who last appeared in 2010 received off-screen deaths. The first was Jackie Dobbs, whose passing led Tyrone to the discovery that she and Darren Dobbs weren't his true parents, and that his only surviving real family was his maternal grandmother Evelyn Plummer. Maureen Lipman joined the programme as Evelyn when producers sought an "outspoken battleaxe" character for the show [28]. Three months later, Roy Hudd's Archie Shuttleworth passed away leaving £80,000 to Audrey Roberts. This was part of a storyline involving con-man Lewis Archer, who had re-surfaced in June and rekindled his relationship with Audrey. Nigel Havers reprised Lewis for his third and final stint in the programme. Audrey's friend Claudia Colby, last seen in 2011, returned a month later, with Rula Lenska joining the main cast for the first time.

A bigger retconning of Coronation Street history was teased when Charles Lawson came back for another short stint as Jim McDonald, who was now out of prison. Returning to the street, Jim was accompanied by a young woman he claimed was his and Liz's dead daughter Katie, supposedly mixed up at birth with the baby they buried. However, "Katie" was quickly revealed to be Jim's girlfriend Hannah Gilmore, who was helping him scam Liz in a revenge plot. Lawson was originally meant to appear for a year, but the controversial storyline was altered in order to tie in with the actor's theatre commitments [29].

Two Barlow weddings took place a month apart, Daniel Osbourne and Sinead Tinker in September and Tracy Barlow and Steve McDonald in October. Daniel and Sinead's Pagan ceremony took place on the day Sinead was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Daniel's discovery of his wife's illness, and her decision not to undergo chemotherapy due to her pregnancy, was followed by a four-hander featuring only Daniel, Sinead, Peter, and Ken Barlow, plus two guest cast.

Other newcomers included Alexandra Mardell as dizzy hairdresser Emma Brooker, Ian Bartholomew as hospital DJ Geoff Metcalfe, father of Tim, and Stirling Gallacher as solicitor Paula Martin, who became Sophie Webster's first significantly older girlfriend. Peter Ash appeared in three episodes as David Platt's cellmate Paul Foreman, while Ben Price made a return as Nick Tilsley in October after a year away from the soap. By the end of the year, Nick had replaced Peter Barlow as Carla's partner at Underworld. Lastly, Fiz Stape was written out temporarily when Jennie McAlpine went on maternity leave. She was explained as going away to Birmingham when misbehaving Hope Stape was referred to a specialist school there.

The episodes broadcast on 14th November featured a piano solo re-arrangement of Eric Spear's theme music as part of a promotion campaign for ITV's broadcast of the John Lewis 2018 Christmas advert starring Sir Elton John the following evening. Similar changes were made on other ITV mainstays airing on 14th and 15th November [30].

Ratings chart for the year

From the figures for the week of 17th to 23rd September BARB introduced "four-screen viewing" which gave combined figures for TV, PC/laptop, tablet and smartphone. This change, made to reflect modern technologies, resulted in overall figures that were not as "rounded up" as in the past but in the case of the latter three methods of viewing, were far more precise.

Averaging 7.60 million viewers across the year, Coronation Streets ratings were down by 55k on 2017, a drop of only 0.7%, and still well up on 2014 to 2016. However, individual months saw greater shifts, with January to May up year-on-year and the later months down from between 100k-600k apiece, with the overall result being a negligible net loss.

Transmitting more episodes than in any previous year, Coronation Street equalled 2017's total of 11 number one chart placings, while no episodes fell outside the top twenty for the second year in a row. The most-watched episode of the year was Episode 9418, in which Eileen Phelan discovered the true extent of Pat's crimes. At 9.38m viewers, this was the programme's biggest audience since Hayley Cropper's death in 2014.
