1990 was Coronation Street's thirty-first year. Within the narrative of the programme characters both old and new started to move into the houses and other premises that were on the site of the Baldwin's Casuals factory while in real life the programme's production base was moved out of the main Granada Television studios and into a refurbished warehouse next to the outdoor set which was called Stage One.
The keys were handed over in a special ceremony by Granada chairman David Plowright and actors were, for the first time, allocated permanent dressing rooms while the programme itself benefited from an exclusive studio for its use. This paved the way in 1996 for the process of rehearsal days followed by studio days being abandoned in favour of a scene-by-scene rehearse-record method of production.
157 new episodes were broadcast on ITV in 1990.
