Todd leans in to kiss Nick

Todd Grimshaw began to struggle with his sexuality in October, marking the beginning of his coming out storyline which had been in the pipeline since the character debuted in 2001. In Episode 5596, after getting to know his girlfriend Sarah's brother Nick Tilsley, Todd instinctively leaned in for a kiss, leading to the latter storming out and informing Sarah. Adam Rickitt agreed to return full-time in preparation for the storyline. Carefully plotted by Daran Little, Todd's confusion over his sexual identity continued into 2004 and the first consensual gay kiss, between Todd and nurse Karl Foster, occurred in Episode 5733 in April.

Although Todd was promoted as Coronation Street's first gay character (with some newspapers incorrectly assuming that he was initially meant to be straight), homosexuals had appeared in minor roles before Todd kissed Nick. One of them was Sean Tully, a clubber at the hospital disco who was seen in one episode in July. Antony Cotton reprised Sean full-time the following year.

To celebrate 60 years of Coronation Street on television, we're going through the programme's entire history a year at a time. The full version of this article can be found here. Check back tomorrow for 2004!

Ena 3

Profile: Ena was the caretaker at the Glad Tidings Mission Hall, Viaduct Street's chapel, from 1937 through to its demolition in 1968. Respected by all and feared by many, Ena was the self-appointed moral guardian of Coronation Street. Ena prided herself on knowing everything that went on in the street and was known to keep information to herself for decades for future use. When not at the mission, she could usually be found in the snug of the Rovers Return, where she and her lifelong friends and fellow widows Minnie Caldwell and Martha Longhurst spent their time discussing the latest goings-on in the street over milk stouts. Typically dressed in a large double breasted coat and hairnet, Ena was an imposing figure, intimidating many of her much younger neighbours. Her most cherished possession was her harmonium, which nobody else was permitted to play.
Did you know? Violet Carson was awarded an O.B.E. in 1965, the first member of the Street cast or production team to receive such an honour and one of the very first people associated with the television industry.

Didyouknow

...that Anthony Schaeffer holds the current record of most roles in the programme with fifteen credited to date?
...that the first episode of the programme ever transmitted that did not feature any of the original cast members from 1960 was Episode 1428 (23rd September 1974)?
...that Stanley Wood, who wrote Episode 1237 (22nd November 1972), was the father of comedian Victoria Wood?
...that in Episode 1183 (17th May 1972), the character of Rita Bates gave her maiden name as "Foster" and not the later-established "Littlewood"?
...that although the character of Armistead Caldwell had died in 1935, his voice was heard in Episode 1256 (29th January 1973)?
...that the first ever repeat of an episode of Coronation Street was on Friday 10th February 1961 when strike action prevented the transmission of that night's edition and Episode 1 was shown in its place?

Les Battersby shows his pleasure at having contributed to Hayley Patterson's happiness

19th April 1999: On the eve of her wedding to Roy Cropper, Hayley Patterson was despondent that none of her friends seemed bothered about a hen night but she was delighted when the girls took her round to 5 Coronation Street and unveiled a party with plenty of food and drink to consume and - a special gift - a train specially made in Underworld to go with her wedding dress. Far less happy when he returned home after the party was Les Battersby who found that his house had been used as a venue for "that freak" but that was nothing compared to when Janice gleefully told him that she had sold his prized record collection to pay for the party. Les swore vengeance...
