Clive Wallace was a councillor friend of Deirdre Barlow's in 1991. After losing the St. Mary's Ward to Alf Roberts, Deirdre was rendered jobless and turned to Clive in hope of gaining employment with his firm of property surveyors. Deirdre had been reluctant to use the "old boy network", preferring to get a job on merit, but after a disappointing trip to the job centre she swallowed her pride and made enquiries.

Arriving unannounced at Clive's office, Deirdre was warmly received by her former colleague and successor as chairman of the Welfare Committee at the Town Hall. Deirdre momentarily claimed that she'd been just passing before abandoning the pretext and confessing that she was looking for work. She pounced on Clive's statement that they were practically fully staffed, making him disclose that the only vacancy was for a cleaner. Clive hadn't wanted to mention the position to Deirdre at all, considering it an insult, and was astonished when she expressed an interest. He refused to employ her in such a lowly position, telling Deirdre that she was way overqualified, and thus Deirdre left his office disappointed.
