The Clerk of the Court read out the charges and took pleas when Emily Nugent and Leonard Swindley appeared in Weatherfield Magistrates Court after a motoring incident in 1965.
The charges against Emily were driving a vehicle on a road while holding only a provisional driving licence and not being accompanied by a qualified driver, and driving the same vehicle the wrong way in a one-way street. Pleading guilty, Emily was fined £5 for the second charge and nothing for the first as the magistrates judged her to have been misled by Swindley. They were less lenient with Swindley, who was charged with accompanying a learner driver while not in possession of a current driving licence. Swindley, who had forgotten to renew his licence, plead guilty and received a £20 fine.
