Chris Trenton was the father of Sam Trenton, a boy who had music lessons alongside Amy Barlow and who took a romantic interest in her grandmother, Liz McDonald. She accompanied the girl, who had taken up the violin, to the Jamila House community centre where Chris helped Sam as he assembled his clarinet. Across the room, he was immediately struck by Liz and caught her eye when he smiled at her. Afterwards, as Liz chatted to Amy outside the Rovers, Chris and Sam stopped in their nice car, asking when the next music club was being held. Amy also made it clear that she was attracted to Sam.
The four met again at the next session where the two adults showed their charges inside but, at Chris's suggestion, retreated to Roy's Rolls for a coffee rather than endure the cacophony of sound. They got on well, laughing about the type of earplugs they used, but a vain Liz made no move whatsoever to correct Chris when he assumed that she was Amy's mother and not one generation older. Afterwards, in the back room, an amused Liz was adamant that she didn't fancy Chris when asked outright by Amy if she did.
A few days later, Chris arrived at the pub with flowers when the pub was hosting a hen night for Kate Connor and Caz Hammond. Liz had previously denied that he was her type, but no one was taken in by her assertion and were amused when the huge bouquet was handed over the bar to her. He charmed the assembled ladies, but they were taken aback when he referred to Liz as Amy's mum. On the quiet, Eva Price and Mary Taylor gave Liz both their support and their agreement that they would keep quiet about her little deception and she felt suitably empowered to accept when he asked her out.
Michelle Connor wasn't clued up on what was taking place and made catty remarks about Tracy Barlow when Chris asked who would be baby-sitting Amy and the others tried to make out that her real mother was an honorary aunt. When Amy walked in to speak to her gran, Liz had to take her aside and get her to agree to keep quiet which she did, in exchange for money and a promise of a new £30 dress.
Sam also went to Weatherfield High and Chris picked up both his son and Amy when they returned there one afternoon. Chris was eager for another date and Liz told him her preference was not the cinema as she wanted to talk to whoever she was out with. Although it looked like love was blossoming, soon afterwards Liz made an extended trip to Spain to stay with her son Andy to get away from the fallout of her old boyfriend Tony Stewart dying and his son Jason Grimshaw taking his grief out on her for driving her away. While she was absent, any potential romance petered out.
- The storyline regarding Chris and his son was abandoned when Beverley Callard took a two-month break to deal with her clinical depression.
