Cheryl Wakefield was the younger sister of Alison Wakefield who lost her life in tragic circumstances.
The two sisters - aged nine and two at the time - were left unsupervised while playing together in the garden of their Tile Street home one sunny day during the school holidays. Alison had taken out a bottle of milk and they wandered out on an "adventure" going for a walk along the canal towpath where, Cheryl ended up falling into the water and subsequently drowned, despite her older sister's best efforts to save her. In the event, their parents were blissfully ignorant of their daughters' whereabouts until it was too late and spent the ensuing years laying the blame on Alison, to the extent that they told her that she'd deliberately pushed Cheryl into the water as she was jealous of all the attention that was lavished on her younger sister.
