Cherry was an escort and a friend of Nicky Wheatley. Daniel Osbourne had been seeing Nicky for a couple of months, not for sex, but more out of loneliness and someone non-judgemental to talk to about his true feelings about his late wife Sinead who had died of cancer the previous October. In part, he grew to fantasise that Nicky was Sinead in some sort of reincarnated form.
Nicky was booked up with other clients for a week and she suggested to Daniel that he spoke with Cherry instead. With the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing and, as physical contact wasn't necessary, they communicated by a video call. Continuing the sort of chats he'd had with Nicky, Daniel spoke of her pride in his son Bertie and how he was developing an inquisitive nature, but was rewarded with one-word answers from Cherry. He eventually gave up and said there was no connection between them which Cherry took to mean that the signal between them had failed. He made his meaning clear, taking the blame for the lack of empathy between them, complimented her but still ended the call. He soon re-established contact with Nicky and resumed his relationship with her.
