When Mel Morton and Abi Sharpe left Milk Bar, where they'd been out celebrating the end of Mel's police training in September 2008, they witnessed Charelle Glover and three other girls in the middle of a street-fight. Despite warnings from Abi, Mel waded in to try to break up the fight and Abi phoned for police assistance. When Chantelle realised that Abi and Mel were themselves off-duty police officers, she set about attacking Abi with a glass bottle.
Abi sustained injuries to her retina that would certainly confine her to a desk job within the force and Mel felt responsible for the turn of events. Some days later she went back to Milk Bar to try and find Chantelle to exact revenge. A concerned Teresa Bryant followed her daughter to the bar and made Mel see that by attacking Chantelle she could put her own career in jeopardy. Teresa, deciding she had nothing to lose, followed Chantelle into the bar's toilets and beat her up herself.
