Coronation Street Wiki

Brighton is the major part of the city and unitary authority of Brighton and Hove (formed from the previous towns of Brighton, Hove, Portslade and several other villages on the south coast of Great Britain). Formerly part of the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, it remains part of the ceremonial county of East Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex.

The ancient settlement of Brighthelmstone dates from before Domesday Book (1086), but it emerged as a health resort featuring sea bathing during the 18th century and became a destination for day-trippers from London after the arrival of the railway in 1841. Brighton experienced rapid population growth, reaching a peak of over 160,000 by 1961. Modern Brighton forms part of the Brighton/Worthing/Littlehampton conurbation stretching along the coast, with a population of around 480,000 inhabitants.

Brighton has two universities and a medical school (which is operated jointly by both universities). In 1989 Jenny Bradley considered studying in Brighton after completing her A-levels but changed her mind and instead enrolled at Manchester Polytechnic in order to be closer to Rita Fairclough.

Nine years later, Victoria Arden had settled in the city and her grandfather Alec Gilroy left Weatherfield to move there and to be with her. The following November Vicky's ex-husband Steve McDonald followed her there in a supposed attempt to rekindle their relationship but in reality to gain control of her money. The plan failed when Steve found out that her financial situation wasn't as rosy as he'd been led to believe. Vicky's former step-grandmother Bet Lynch came to the resort to assist her in her marriage to Robert and ended up living there for the next few years and in November 2003, Liz McDonald also joined her there for a period. Her son, Andy has also frequently visited the resort.

Fred Elliott had a holiday there in June 2004.

Michael Rodwell lived in Brighton for a time in early 2016 making a living as an ice cream man after falling out with Eileen Grimshaw over Pat Phelan and failing to get back together with estranged wife Gail. He returned to the street in July 2016, shortly before the murder of Gail's daughter-in-law Kylie.

Behind the scenes

Brighton was used as the principle location for the six-episode 1999 spin-off Coronation Street - After Hours although filming was also conducted at Dover and France amongst other places.
