Bill was a regular at The Green Man in Blackburn. In 1965, during a visit to his local watering hole Bill had a short conversation with Len Fairclough. Len had been offered a job opportunity in Blackburn by Willie Piggott and had yet to make his mind up on the matter. By introducing himself to some of the regulars at the Green Man, he hoped to get a feel for the place.
The man got off to a bad start from the moment Bill walked through the door as he did so just as Len asked the waitress Rosie for another pint, causing Rosie to ignore Len in favour of the familiar face. Sitting next to Len at the bar, Bill engaged in small talk with the builder about how quiet it was in the pub but showed no interest in carrying on the conversation beyond this, falling silent when Len told him that he was in the building trade. At that moment, a female friend of Bill's entered the pub and Bill asked Rosie to serve his drink in the other room as he went off to join her, making his apologies to Len. This was one of several bad experiences that caused Len to decline the Blackburn offer.
