Beginning her career as an actress in repertory theatre Beryl Bainbridge, CBE (born in Liverpool on 21st November 1932, died in London on 2nd July 2010), appeared on Coronation Street in January 1961 as Ginnie, a student friend of Ken Barlow.

Her other acting roles include Rookery Nook, Biggles (in an episode scripted by Tony Warren), Knight Errant Limited, Family Solicitor and Doomwatch.

She made her radio debut in 1955 in a Children's Hour play, acting alongside Violet Carson.

Since much better known as an author, she was shortlisted five times for the Booker prize for fiction, with over twenty books to her name before her death including An Awfully Big Adventure, Every Man for Himself and Master Georgie.
