Bernard Frederic Bemrose Kay (born 23rd February 1928 in Bolton, died 25th December 2014 in Brent, London) appeared on Coronation Street in two different roles: firstly as bus driver Jim Foster between September and October 1961, and he returned to the programme in January 1994 as Clive Phillips, son-in-law of Maud Grimes.
Working life began as a reporter at the Bolton Evening News and was conscripted in 1946. He started acting in the army and subsequently gained a scholarship to the Old Vic Theatre School, turning professional in 1950 and appearing in their productions of Bartholomew Fair, The Wedding, Henry V, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Twelfth Night.
His other television credits included roles in Charlesworth at Large, The Infamous John Friend, Spy-Catcher, Maigret, Dixon of Dock Green, No Hiding Place, The Avengers, Z Cars, Redcap, Doctor Who, The Villains, Softly Softly, The Champions, Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) - in the same episode as Geoffrey Hughes, Crown Court, Emmerdale Farm, The Sweeney, The Professionals, Grange Hill, Dick Turpin, The Gentle Touch, Juliet Bravo, The Bill, Crossroads, Minder, Remington Steele, London's Burning, Jonathan Creek, Casualty, Foyle's War, Doctors and Casualty 1909.
Film roles included Carry on Sergeant, The Shuttered Room, They Came from Beyond Space, Interlude, Darling Lili, Trog, Lady Caroline Lamb, The Hiding Place, Voyage of the Damned, Sweeney!, Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, The Case of Marcel Duchamp, Pierrepoint and Psychosis.
Further stage credits included roles in productions of Robinson, The Ermine, The Vanity Case, Gideon's Fear, Piermaster, A Streetcar Named Desire, Suez, The Green Parakeet, Death of a Salesman and Platonov, along with several works with the RSC.
