Benn was a man who traded with Peter Barlow for him to buy a motorbike. Peter was convinced that there was a viable alternative to trading by capitalism causing an exasperated Carla Barlow to make a bet with him that he couldn't trade up from an onion bhaji to a motorbike with her offering to buy him a leather jacket if she lost the bet. Peter went into the transaction with a vengeance, managing to trade items up each time to the point where he had a tablet as his bargaining chip. Knowing of the bet, Abi Webster alerted Peter when Benn turned up at Webster's Autocentre asking if they knew anybody who would buy his bike. She informed Peter who was somewhat reluctant as he knew Benn would want additional cash in addition to the tablet, and that violated the terms of the bet. However, when Carla treated his efforts with contempt, he was stung enough to stretch the rules a little and contact Benn.
The two men met outside the Rovers where Ben was reluctant to say why he was selling the motorbike which was in excellent condition. He wasn't pleased though when Peter offered him the tablet and £200 pounds. The seller suddenly spotted PC Jess Heywood parking up in Viaduct Street and hastily agreed to the deal, taking the tablet and making off for Rosamund Street quickly. After buying a sandwich at the corner shop, Jess approached Peter as she had recognised the bike and asked him why he was in possession of a stolen vehicle. After taking him to Weatherfield Police Station, the police quickly caught up with Benn and were able to return Peter's tablet.
