The Bandsman called at the corner shop on Coronation Street one night in June 1968 looking for his friend Terry. He was absolutely paralytic, having been taking part in a procession earlier in the day where he and Terry had met and agreed to meet later on, with Terry telling him to bring some bottles to his house at 11 Rosamund Street. Mistaking the corner shop for Terry's house in his drunken haze, he tried to burst in and had to be held back by Gordon Clegg. The timing of the call couldn't be worse: Les Clegg had lapsed in his fight against alcoholism and was missing after going off to play on Jack Walker's bowls team. Gordon and Maggie Clegg were frantic with worry and the bandsman's loud hammering on the locked shop door made them fear the worst. Gordon thus easily lost his temper with the man and physically threw him out of the shop when he wouldn't listen to his explanation that he had come to the wrong place.
