Babbacombe is a district of Torquay, Devon. Known by some as the "Jewel in the crown of the English Riviera", by the end of the 19th Century it had established itself as a desirable Victorian holiday destination.

In July 1961, Jack and Annie Walker enjoyed a holiday in Torquay where the only sour point was meeting a couple named Wilson who put on airs and graces, annoying Jack intensely when they looked down their noses at him, but getting perfectly well with Annie. They wrote to the Walkers one year later, offering to share a maisonette for two weeks with the Walkers in the August but Jack refused point blank. Annie ended up going on her own and returned full of stories of the well-to-do Arthur Forsyth-Jones who she had met there, boring her husband and all her regulars with her constant references to him.
