Australia, a Commonwealth of Nations country and continent of about 21 million people, is occasionally mentioned in the script of "Coronation Street". A handy place to send characters so that viewers don't expect to see them again, or to dredge up "long-lost" relatives without having to explain why they have not been mentioned before.

It has also produced the occasional actor or other production worker.

The show was first shown in Australia in 1963 and by 1966 it was more popular there than in the UK. The show left free to view television in Australia by 1983 but is still shown on the UK.TV service since 1995. Nine Network ran a few episodes in 1994, 1995 and in 2000 to mark the 40th anniversary.

Ramsay Clegg was sent here when given up by his unmarried mother Eunice and had spent his entire life here. He had returned to the UK twice, in 1959 however had returned sometime after due to the death of his mother and being given the cold shoulder by his half-brother Norris Cole. Nearly 50-years later Ramsay had returned to the UK again throughout the course of 2009 in order to try and make amends with Norris after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. When all had failed he had returned on a flight to Australia, however had died on the way back.
