The show was first shown in Australia in 1963. Shown on a regional basis, Melbourne commenced transmissions on GTV-9 on 14th November at 9.15pm with episodes shown on Monday and Thursday 9.00pm while the programme didn't debut on the Sydney channel TCN9 until Wednesday 29th January 1964 with a double bill of Episodes 1 and 2 at 9.00pm and a single episode thereafter each week on Wednesdays at 9.00pm. That station bought the first 26 episodes in May 1963, a further 126 in December 1965 and by 1966 it was more popular there than in the UK. Constant scheduling changes in the mid-1970s led to the show being dropped in 1976 but transmission resumed in 1979 with Episode 1588 - the first to be shown in colour - on Channel 9. The show had left free-to-view television by 1983 but has been shown on the UK.TV service since 1995. Nine Network ran a few episodes in 1994, 1995 and in 2000 to mark the 40th anniversary.
Role in Coronation StreetEdit
In April 1968, David and Irma Barlow left Coronation Street and emigrated to Australia, where their son Darren was born later that year. Two years later, in April 1970, the Barlows were involved in a car accident which killed David and Darren. Irma survived and returned to Weatherfield.
In 2003, after Lucy Richards discovered Peter Barlow was a bigamist, also married to Shelley Unwin, she jetted off to Australia with their baby son, Simon. Simon moved back to Weatherfield shortly after Lucy died of breast cancer in 2008. Ramsay Clegg was sent here when given up by his unmarried mother Eunice and had spent his entire life here. He had returned to the UK twice, in 1959 however had returned sometime after due to the death of his mother and being given the cold shoulder by his half-brother Norris Cole. Nearly 50-years later Ramsay had returned to the UK again throughout the course of 2009 in order to try and make amends with Norris after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. When all had failed he had returned on a flight to Australia, however had died on the way back.
