The Audiologist diagnosed Aled Winter-Brown as having profound permanent hearing loss in both his ears a few months after he had been born.
Aled was referred to her after he failed his neonatal screening, with a result that suggested that there was a hearing problem. For the more advanced test, the audiologist needed Aled to be asleep but the baby was full of life at the time of the appointment. Rescheduled for a just a couple of days later following a cancellation, the test was carried out but with the devastating result given to his parents Chesney Brown and Gemma Winter. The next step was to take moulds for hearing aids in both ears but Gemma was hardly in a position to take in the news, absorbed by the thought that he had never heard her say "I love you" to him.
Having taken in the news, the parents later returned to see the audiologist to question her about a secondary procedure which would take place when Aled was one year old and which involved a cochlear implant. Specifically, they had read about the process on the internet and the fact that it involved drilling into the child's skull. The audiologist took them through the procedure and assured them that there was minimal risk and if it was her own child, she would go ahead with it.
A few weeks later, the parents returned for the fitting of the aids which the audiologist carried out alongside a teacher of the deaf. They explained the process that they would follow and once it had been completed, Chesney was delighted to see his son react to his voice. Suffering with undiagnosed post-natal depression, Gemma showed less emotion at the progress that had been made.
