Archie Shuttleworth was a local undertaker who ran Shuttleworth's Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street.

He was a companion of Coronation Street resident Blanche Hunt, although later became a close friend to Audrey Roberts. Archie was supportive of Audrey during her crusade against her shady son-in-law Richard Hillman, who Audrey was convinced was a murderer. Archie, along with Audrey and Norris Cole, were the only few people to be convinced that Richard wasn't right, which was proven correct when he was exposed as a killer in February 2003. Following Richard's demise Archie and Audrey grew closer and he later proposed to her, although she turned him down. This caused a broken-hearted Archie to call off their relationship and he left behind Coronation Street.

Archie would later find himself back at the street when he held the funeral for long-standing Weatherfield residents Mike Baldwin and later Fred Elliott. Archie resurfaced for a final time for Blanche's funeral in May 2010, and used the opportunity to toast his late friend as well as catch up with Audrey.

Archie passed away in December 2018 age 84, with his son George inheriting his business.

Biography

Archie first appeared as Blanche Hunt's new companion. Archie always saw the good in Blanche. He asked Audrey Roberts to help out part-time and dress the hair of some of his deceased clients - but this made Blanche jealous. By then Archie had ended his relationship with Blanche, he became a very good friend to Audrey - even opening his home to her after her son in law Richard Hillman attempted to kill her by burning down her house. Archie was the only one at first that believed that Audrey was not losing her mind and that Richard was trying to kill her and stood by her admirably. He eventually fell in love with Audrey but when he asked her if there was any chance they could be more than friends, she gently told him there could not be.

Archie returned for Mike Baldwin's funeral in April 2006.

When his friend Blanche died in May 2010, he held her funeral and even returned to the Rovers to toast to her. He was glad to see that Audrey was happy.

In December 2018, Audrey received news that Archie had passed away, and reminisced about him in the Rovers with Rita and Ken. Audrey received £80,000 in Archie's will while Ken was given a brass monkey which had previously been given to Archie in Blanche's will.

Background information

Publicity photo of Roy Hudd as Archie Shuttleworth in 2002.

Actor and comedian Roy Hudd appeared as Archie Shuttleworth as a regular from February 2002 to July 2003. The character was involved in the storyline involving killer Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) and in January 2003 was billed as a possible new murder victim of Richard's, appearing in ITV1's Killer Corrie trailer alongside Audrey Roberts, Emily Bishop and Toyah Battersby as Richard spoke about his murderous intentions. The eventual victim was Maxine Peacock, who wasn't seen in the trailer.

Following his exit as Archie, Hudd returned for two guest stints in 2006, first in April for the funeral of Mike Baldwin, and then in October for Fred Elliott. Hudd reprised the role for a final time for two episodes in May 2010 for the funeral of Blanche Hunt, following the real life passing of Maggie Jones in December 2009. Hudd made his final appearance as the character in Episode 7337 on 10th May 2010.

Over eight years later Archie was killed off-screen in December 2018. In real life Hudd passed away over a year later on 15th March 2020.
