Antony Ernest Brown (born 8th May 1929 in Kilburn, London; died 22nd March 2021 in Dorset) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly in November 1969 as the chairman magistrate at the trial of Elsie Tanner for shoplifting (credited as "Anthony Brown"); and he returned to the programme in March 1972 as harassed rent officer, Mr. Grimley.
He graduated from RADA in 1955 and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company the following year.
His other television credits included roles in Compact, Crown Court, Boy Dominic, Life and Death of Penelope, Love for Lydia, Disraeli, Malice Aforethought, Sweet Nothings, The Jewel in the Crown, Mr. Palfrey of Westminster, The Brief, Drummonds, Lovejoy and Soldier Soldier.
Film roles included The Hi-Jackers, Sweeney!, Silver Dream Racer, Give My Regards to Broad Street and Brazil.
On stage, he appeared in productions of Love Labour's Lost, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Measure for Measure, Toad of Toad Hall, Cymbeline, As You Like It, Julius Caesar, The Tempest, Twelfth Night, King John, Much Ado About Nothing and Henry VI for the RSC and The Browning Version, Harlequinade, The Elephant Man and Ting Tang Mine for the National Theatre. Other works included A Night on the Island, The Director of the Opera, Ghosts, The Seagull, Three Sisters and Gloo Joo.
