Anita was a barmaid in a Manchester city centre pub where Paul Kershaw went to celebrate his birthday in the company of Lloyd Mullaney, Steve McDonald and Brian Packham. There was high tension between Paul and Lloyd due to the latter taking offence a few weeks earlier when he overheard Paul using the phrase "play the white man" during a game of darts in the Rovers. The dispute between them had reached the point of violent assault which ended up with Paul in court and the drink out was suggested by Eileen Grimshaw as an attempt to bury the hatchet. It didn't work and Lloyd found himself alone in the establishment.
A gang of racist thugs started to create trouble, especially when Lloyd started to chat Anita up. Mark, one of the thugs, asked for a lager and black, putting stress on the latter. Lloyd gave Anita one of his Street Cars cards and left, only for the thugs to ambush him outside. Paul came back to Lloyd's rescue and Anita rang the police, rushing outside to tell the gang that they were on their way. This caused the lads to disperse.
