Alex Soames was Gamma Garments's personnel manager who interviewed Elsie Tanner for the position of sales assistant at the Rosamund Street branch in 1965.
Carrying out the interviews at the plush Morton Towers Hotel, Mr Soames met with three candidates: Elsie, Mrs Allen, and Miss Berry. Second to be seen, Elsie was in and out in only a few minutes as Mr Soames took note of her lack of experience in gents outfitting and the fact that her most recent character reference was from 1947, with nothing from her most recent employer Miami Modes.
Outside of the interview itself, Elsie did not expect to get the job as Mr Soames knew one of the other candidates, Miss Berry, personally. Nevertheless, Soames asked Elsie to wait until he'd interviewed all three. After hearing Soames name a date to Miss Berry, Elsie started to lay into the man for wasting her time, only to be told that the job was hers and the arrangement she'd overheard was purely social.
