Alexander Tocher Johnston (born 1936 in Fintray, Scotland; died 21st October 2007 in Salisbury) appeared on Coronation Street in July 1980 as George Bannister, a prospective buyer for the corner shop.
He trained as a pharmacist before turning to acting at the age of 30.
His other credits included roles in Cribb, Ladykillers, Shades of Darkness, Rumpole of the Bailey, Alice in Wonderland and David Copperfield, along with the TV movie Closing Ranks.
On stage, he appeared in productions of Journey's End, Toytown, Arms and the Man, The Unknown Soldier and his Wife, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, All in Good Time, The Hostage, Present Laughter, The Seagull and Saved for the Worcester Repertory Company, along with Equus, All Together Now, Mrs Warren's Profession, Mine Hostess, Habeas Corpus, Spider's Web, Aladdin, An Ideal Husband, Journey's End, Shadow Play, Murder in the Cathedral, Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Babes in the Wood, The Woodlanders, Salad Days, Educating Rita, Amadeus, Double Cut, A Tale of Two Cities, And Then There Were None, Hay Fever, Hobson's Choice, Pravda, A Chorus of Disapproval and When We Are Married for the Salisbury Arts Theatre. Other works included The Trial and Execution of Charles I, Downright Hooligan, Ten Times Table and Daisy Pulls It Off.
