Alan Downer (12th September, 1930 - 16th March, 1995) was a Welsh-born actor and writer. Married to Carry on actress Dilys Laye, he wrote 5 episodes of Coronation Street between June 1979 and June 1980. A prolific bit-part actor in many British television dramas over three decades, he also wrote for popular ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm. He was booked to play Alan Mather in Episode 253 (15th May 1963) but on recording Graham Lines took over the part instead.
