Ajax Engineering was a Weatherfield firm that employed David Barlow as an apprentice from some point in the late 1950s until June 1961 when he left to take up a career as a professional footballer with a second division London club having been talent-spotted while playing for Weatherfield County FC.
When David's fellow workers gave him his send-off, his Foreman told him that if things didn't work out, he would try and find him a place back at his old firm. In the event, when David did return permanently to the area in 1965 an injury killed his footballing career and he took over the Corner Shop the following year before emigrating to Australia in April 1968 where he was killed in a car accident two years later.
