18 Gas Street was part of a condemned Victorian tenement in Weatherfield. It was the home of the Grimshaw family and at least three generations of that family had lived in the house until it was destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. It was also the birthplace of Elsie Grimshaw, who lived there from her birth in 1923 to 1939 when she married Arnold Tanner and moved into 11 Coronation Street. Elsie's parents Arthur and Alice Grimshaw and all of her siblings, with the exception of Fay and Phyllis, were killed by the bomb that destroyed the property on 22nd December 1940.
